A premier league football team has a higher gate ticket price than your local Team’s charity match. We know they are a national, so they tender for insurance contracts and pay more for marketing, PR and bigger bases of operations. They’re bound to have bigger overheads, and you’re more likely to search for Autoglass than you are for ‘windscreen repair in Peterborough’. We have our local customer base and they have their national branding and broader coverage.

We only answer this because it is asked a lot and we really hope that you will seek the value of a local independent in your area and closer to home in Peterborough.

How likely is a cracked windscreen to shatter?
Not really; Glass in cars for a very long time have been made with installed layers of shatterproof transparent layers you can’t see. A windscreen will not as a result of a chip or crack explode into thousands of tiny pieces as you’re driving along. Not the same way as if a windscreen is hit by a heavy impact. These layers originally put in, not just to stop the glass for shattering, but are also to prevent large shards and splintering of the glass in a vehicle collision (Which happened on some of the very early cars).

Earlier versions of these plastics had a more rubber/ elastic property, which caused other issues on impact, so these see through layers don’t have this elasticity or stretch property.

Is it worth repairing a chipped windscreen?
Fix a chipped windscreen as soon as it happens; Do it now, do it quick because repairing a cracked windscreen is a much larger and more costly job. Fix the chip and avoid a further crack. We’re here to help and paying now for a chipped windscreen repair service is choosing to use our services cheaper now, than having to use us in the future for a bigger job. Any crack which obscures or prevents the driver’s clear vision is going to be considered dangerous and illegal. If the traffic police see you with a crack in the middle right-hand side of your windscreen, you could encounter penalties including both a fixed penalty fine and points. When weighing up the cost of repair, compare it to the fixed penalty amount plus the cost of increased insurance premiums. ( + 30% for the next 3 years without any other points – possibly longer)

The MOT rules are no chips of 10mm or more lined up in front of your steering wheel, and no more than 40mm anywhere else on your windscreen.

Does a cracked windscreen affect insurance?
A claim for a windscreen repair or replacement for most insurers won’t increase your renewal premium if you make it. That’s not the same for every insurance company and/or policy. Some insurers and their policies have other costs when you claim. We do some insurance jobs, as we are approached for them, but we feel it is better for us as a business and for you as a customer when we provide the service direct, and you know what the cost is now, knowing you won’t pay more another way, further down the line.

You should have damage to a windshield repaired as quickly as possible. An older car might not be as forgiving as a newer one when it comes to things like dirt, temperature or even vibration. All of these things can all affect the crack and let’s face it, your nearly new car which is pride and joy is not something you would keep looking unsightly for too long, anyway.

There isn’t way to know how long or what time you have until a crack or chip grows and spreads. It’s just better to do it sooner rather than later. Would a chip in the summer turn into a dangerous crack later in the winter, when your plans to see family over the holidays might be affected?

Can a crack of 6 inches in a windshield be repaired?
Can a 9 inch long crack in a car windshield be mended?
Can a 10 inch van windscreen crack be sorted without a replacement?
The size of the glass crack in inches is not the only thing to consider if a replacement or a repair is the best service for you. The shape, splintering, depth of a chip along the crack and where it is in terms of the usable area of the windscreen is really what determines which is best for you and your vehicles’ windscreen.

A 3 inch crack can result in a screen replacement being needed, a certain crack of 5 inches may easily be repaired. And you might even prefer to replace the screen even with a 4 inch crack in the glass, that could still have been repaired.

What windscreen damage is repairable?
A repair located any closer to the edge of the glass could potentially weaken the windscreen as a whole, so normally a replacement is required. Chips that are more than 7cm from the edge of the windscreen can usually be repaired safely.
